And Adobe responds…

Apr 30, 2010 | 17 comments

Folks we are back in the school yard. We are all 10 again and a crowd of kids has formed rather rambunctiously around the two bullies fighting in the center. On the one side they say this and on the other they say that. We have already spoken previously about Apple’s point of view here so it is only fair to tackle Adobe’s next. My problem with them is that they are either cognizant of the fact that they have a flimsy argument or they just really suck at fighting.

You can check out the highlight reel of their reply here. Here were a few things I found particularly interesting:

“When you resort to licensing language” to restrict this sort of development, he says, it has “nothing to do with technology.”

I do agree that surreptitiously inserting shady legal ease into their end user agreement was a bit of a cowardly approach to addressing this problem. Clearly Apple has clearly defined issues with Flash as it pertains to their devices so why not just come right out and say so?

Mr. Narayan calls accusations about Flash draining battery power “patently false.”

Well according to FlashMobileBlog here this may not be too far off. There are a slew of other reports online as well that may support this statement as truth as well. Every report appears to be centered around the Nexus One naturally so for everyone else, you may be shit out of luck. For a supported list of devices you can check out Adobe’s site here and here.

Overall this interview seems to state “we don’t really care, on the outside”. I this is further enforced by Adobe’s CTO Kevin Lynch said:

“… Given the legal terms Apple has imposed on developers, we have already decided to shift our focus away from Apple devices for both Flash Player and AIR. We are working to bring Flash Player and AIR to all the other major participants in the mobile ecosystem, including Google, RIM, Palm (soon to be HP), Microsoft, Nokia and others,” Adobe’s chief technology officer, Kevin Lynch, posted in a blog on Thursday evening.

Well we knew they had to say something didn’t we and quite frankly I am a little disappointed and a little relieved. Disappointed that they couldn’t mount a bit stronger of an offense here. I mean Stevie just called them out in a pretty big way and you essentially just let it happen? Come on guys, where is your fight? Relieved that since it was such a weak reply it may mean we hear a bit less about it, although I am not holding my breath.

So
